CHARACTERS - our beloved Lostees

Boone Carlisle. The overprotective, somewhat naggy older step-brother of Shannon. "God's friggin gift to humanity," as Shannon calls him. He has a bit of a hero complex; he tries so hard to help others but often fails. He has a somewhat twisted, romantic past with his sister, who tricked him several times into believing that she was being abused by her boyfriends so that she could get his money. After watching Shannon die in a hallucination that Locke made him go through, Boone is trying to "let go" and stop caring so much about his sister. His episode is titled "Hearts and Minds" and is the 13th of Lost's first season.

The son of a massage therapist and building contactor, Ian Somerhalder was born in the small town of Mandeville, Louisiana. Boating, swimming, fishing and training horses filled much of his time growing up, as did the drama club and performing with the local theatre group. At 16 he began pursuing acting professionally in New York, and by 19 he had committed himself to working with the prestigious acting coach, William Esper. Somerhalder's breakout opportunity came with the lead role on the series Young Americans. His other television credits include CSI, CSI: Miami, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Smallville. On the big screen Somerhalder will next be seen in In Enemy Hands. He recently starred in Changing Hearts, The Rules of Attraction, and Anatomy of a Hate Crime. He also starred in Irwin Winkler's feature, Life as a House. For this role, Somerhalder was honored by Movieline Magazine's "Young Hollywood Awards," receiving the Fresh New Face Award. Additionally, he was named one of People Magazine's 50 Sexiest Men in the fall of 2002. Somerhalder was the face of GUESS? Clothing and was featured in their fall campaigns for two years running. He has also worked on campaigns for prestigious designers such as Versace, Esprit and Persol, among many others. Somerhalder spends much of his time writing, reading, producing and perfecting his craft.

Charlie Pace. A self-titled "bloody rock god." A member of a former band called "Driveshaft," Charlie was a drug addict until Locke helped him to get over his addiction. He and Claire were building a very sweet and lovey-dovey relationship when, suddenly, Claire was kidnapped by Ethan Rom. He is very protective of Claire (he shot and killed her kidnapper, Ethan Rom) and wants to take care of her. His desire to care for her might be a reaction to a comment made by a former girlfriend (whose heart he seemingly broke): "you will never take care of anyone." His two episodes are titled "The Moth" and "Homecoming" and are the 7th and 15th episodes of Lost's first season.

Dominic Monaghan is best known for his portrayal of the Hobbit, Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck, in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Monaghan can soon be seen in writer-director Rebecca Cook's dark psychological drama, Shooting Livien. Next up for Monaghan is Chris Atkins' The Purifiers, and Spivs, a heist film. Monaghan was born in Berlin and grew up in Manchester, England. He is an active environmentalist and enjoys the outdoors, monkeys, insects and football (U.S. Soccer), particularly Manchester United. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his pet black widow spider and her babies.

Claire Littleton. The sweet, kind, innocent, pregnant sweetheart of the island. Her dreams of the future in her pre-Lost life were shattered when her baby's father (Thomas) left her. She was planning on giving her baby up for adoption when a psychic (who she had formerly visited, only to be told that he did not wish to tell her her future) told her that she MUST be the one to raise her child-- that her child must not be raised by another. He gave her the plane tickets that led to the plane crash. Claire's bad luck continued when she was kidnapped by Ethan Rom and returned with amnesia. Claire once loved Charlie but will have to work hard to regain that love. Her episode is titled "Raised by Another" and is the 15th of Lost's first season.

Emilie (pronounced Emily) de Ravin first garnered the attention of international audiences with her performance on the popular television series Beastmaster: The Legend Continues. Within one month of moving to Los Angeles from her home in South Melbourne, Australia, she landed the series regular role of Tess Harding on Roswell. Soon after, she starred in the television remake of Stephen King's classic horror film, Carrie. Emilie recently finished shooting the lead role in the feature film Santa's Slay. In addition she recently completed work on the film Brick. She also recurred on the series The Handler. Emilie's rising stardom is based upon many years of performance experience and intensive training. She has studied ballet since the age of nine. At the age of 15 she was accepted into the prestigious and highly selective Australian Ballet School. She performed in productions of the Australian Ballet Company, as well as Danceworld 301.

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes. The island's funny, laidback, approachable guy who provides our comic relief. He created the island's golf course so that everyone could have some fun and we all love him for that. His discman provides the background music for the show's closing montages... or did, anyway. His batteries finally ran out in episode 17. He seems to be the one character who hasn't received much hate. We don't know much about him as of right now but definitely will soon.

When Jorge Garcia played a villain in his school's seventh-grade musical production, based on the comic strip, "Drabble," his song brought down the house. It was then that he realized that acting might just be the ticket for him. After college he joined the Beverly Hills Playhouse and has been working steadily ever since. His television credits include a series regular on Becker, guest leads on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Spin City, and the television movie Columbo: Columbo Likes the Nightlife. Garcia will soon be seen on the big screen in the films The Good Humor Man and Little Athens. On stage he has appeared in productions of The Midnight Zone, Something Borrowed Something Blue, Romancing Valentino, Fiddler on the Roof, Hurlyburly and Guys and Dolls. Garcia enjoys doing standup comedy and has performed at the Laugh Factory and Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He likes singing Rock 'n' Roll and has worked in record stores since high school — amassing a huge CD collection.

Jack Shephard. The island's leading man. This charismatic doctor has, against his will, become the island's hero. He had to push away his own problems (with the death of his father) immediately upon becoming aware of his and the other plane passenger's current situation when their plane crashed. Since day one, he's been helping others and trying to keep things under control. Despite having been told by his father that he doesn't have what it takes to be a hero, it seems that that is indeed what he has become. His episodes are titled "White Rabbit" and "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues" with are the 5th and 11th episodes of Lost's first season.

Matthew Fox is an actor cut from the proverbial leading man cloth, carrying himself with strong charisma and a powerful presence. Fox is best known for starring in the hugely successful series, Party of Five, winner of the 1996 Golden Globe for Best Drama. He has other numerous credits, which include a starring role in the critically acclaimed series, Haunted and the made-for-television movie, Behind the Mask. Hailing from a ranch in Wyoming, where his family raised horses and barley, Fox enjoyed the all-American upbringing that led him to play football at Columbia University, where he also studied economics. With every intent of being a successful Wall Street broker, Fox instead was swayed to modeling, which led to some commercial spots, and he has been sold on acting ever since.

Jin. The paradoxical husband of the Korean couple. The lost-est of the lost in that he is the only Lostee who can't speak English. He is known to be sweet, rude, wonderful, disgusting, caring, murderous, tender, and scary all in one episode. After watching "...In Translation," though, we have a somewhat clearer picture of who Jin really is. Contrary to what most of us had formerly believed, he is NOT a murderer. It has become evident that Jin genuinely loved his wife (and that she loved him in return) and that complications with his father-in-law led to a lack of communication that ultimately tore them apart. Yet many of us viewers are hoping for them to regain that (amazingly beautiful) love that they once had. Jin's episode is titled "...In Translation" and is the 17th of Lost's first season.

Daniel Dae Kim has been steadily building a successful career in film, television and on stage. Over the past two seasons Kim has been seen recurring on 24, and on ER. He also played attorney Gavin Park on Angel, as well as appearing on numerous shows as a guest star. He recently wrapped production on the action film Cave. This summer he was also seen in Spider-Man 2. Kim, who earned an M.F.A. degree in acting from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, continues to work on stage in Los Angeles and New York. He has performed in plays from Shakespeare to Beckett to improv comedy. Recently he optioned the rights to the Leonard Chang novel, Over the Shoulder. The project is currently in development to become an independent feature.

Kate. The enigmatic, kind-hearted criminal. This sweet, generous, helpful, and compassionate leading lady was accompanied on the plane by a Marshal, who, before he dies, tells Jack that Kate can not be trusted and is dangerous. She has an obsession with a small, green toy plane that is linked to either a man she loves, or a man she killed (or both?). Both Jack and Sawyer are attracted by her. She knows how to handle a gun and she also knows how to manipulate others. Her episodes are titled "Tabula Rasa" and "Whatever the Case May Be," which are the 3rd and 12th episodes of Lost's first season.

Evangeline Lilly's combination of irresistible charm and natural talent is earning her a reputation as one of the most promising young actresses in Hollywood. Three years ago Lilly was discovered by a Ford agent on the streets of Kelowna, BC, but passed up an offer to sign with the agency. While acting had been a dream of hers since she was a teenager, she abandoned the notion for the more aesthetic dream of working in international relations. Six months later Lilly moved to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia and decided to sign with Ford to help pay for tuition. After appearing in a few commercials, she decided to give up acting and focus on studying. A couple of years later, a friend urged her to give acting another shot and, after a role in Kingdom Hospital, Lilly caught the acting bug. Lilly founded and ran a world development and human rights committee at her university. She has lived under a grass hut in the jungles of the Philippines with a missionary group, and has been a volunteer for children's projects since the age of 14. Lilly is fluent in French and loves ice skating, canoeing, kayaking, snowboarding and rock climbing.

John Locke. The man who is seen by others as either 1) an utterly creepy and scary man who carries hundreds of knives or 2) a man who, in his caring and nurturing ways, helps the other Lostees with their problems. He, having been given a gift--the ability to walk--from the island, believes that the island is beautiful. He has been caring for the other castaways in a way that no one else has. He has been finding their weaknesses, bringing them out, and helping them to be eliminated. Already, he has helped Jack (with his 'daddy issues'), Boone (with his sister-obsession through a hallucinogen) and Charlie (with his heroin addiction). He has also helped the other lostaways in more subtle ways.

Terry O'Quinn's impressive gallery of film and television characters includes many diverse roles. He rose to prominence as the outwardly gentle but actually maniacal master of the house in Joseph Ruben's chilling The Stepfather. Though he went on to play leads in other films like Prisoners of the Sun and The Forgotten One, his weight was more effectively felt in supporting roles such as Howard Hughes in Disney's The Rocketeer. Other feature film credits include Old School, The X-Files: Fight the Future, Primal Fear, Ghosts of Mississippi, Tombstone, Blind Fury, Young Guns, Black Widow, Heaven's Gate and Places in the Heart. On television O'Quinn had starring roles in Millennium and Harsh Realm, with recurring roles on The West Wing, Alias and Jag. He has guest starred on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The X Files and Roswell. On Broadway O'Quinn appeared in Foxfire and Curse of the Aching Heart, and Off-Broadway in Richard III.

Michael Dawson. The lone father of the island. A man who has good intentions and wants to be a great father for his son, but seems a bit unstable and has a pretty bad temper. He, despite his greatest wishes, was not present in Walt's life during his childhood and is facing many difficulties now that he not only has to get his son to love him and trust him, but has to get him off of the island as well. He's felt threatened by Locke in that Walt has been spending a lot more time with Locke than Michael and seems to view Locke as a father-figure in his life. However, he IS trying and may be one of the island's greatest heroes if he manages to build a raft that will bring the Lostaways home. His episode is titled "Special" and is the 14th of Lost's first season.

An accomplished actor who has graced the stage, screen, and television, Harold Perrineau has earned a well-deserved reputation as a performer willing to take on any role. Perrineau recently starred on stage in Suzan Lori Parks' 2001 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Topdog/Underdog. On the big screen, he was featured in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, as well as The Best Man. For this role he received an Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. Additionally, he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Rashid Cole in Wayne Wang's critically acclaimed feature, Smoke. His other feature film credits include Woman on Top, Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, Lulu on the Bridge and The Edge. On television Perrineau is best known for his role as the wheelchair bound Augustus Hill on Oz. His other television credits include a role in the TV movie An American Tempest, as well as guest appearances on ER, Law & Order and The Cosby Show. Perrineau began his career in theatre, where he acted in a number of plays, including Dreamgirls, the critically acclaimed Avenue X, the Off-Broadway revival of Godspell and The Love of Bullets at the Public Theater. Most recently he garnered critical acclaim in Joe Penhall's Blue/Orange, where he starred as a young man who received the diagnosis of a borderline personality disorder. A native of Brooklyn, Perrineau studied music and theatre at the Shenandoah Conservatory. He also studied on scholarship at the Alvin Ailey Company.

Sawyer. AKA "James." The rude, insulting, mean, yet oddly likeable con man. As Kate has pointed out, this guy acts as if he WANTS people to hate him. From giving nicknames that often are not appreciated to being absolutely cruel (like when he beat up Boone who was just trying to find Shannon's asthma medicine), Sawyer's a jerk. However, he could be changing. He's become increasingly approachable and almost friendly. He's actually smiling! If he can realize that, as Locke said, the island lets you to start over, then we can definitely hope to see those killer dimples a lot more often. His episodes are titled "Confidence Man" and "Outlaws" and are the 8th and 16th of Lost's first season.

Josh Holloway was born in Northern California but moved after only two years to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, where he was raised the second-eldest of four boys. From an early age he discovered a passion and love for films. After one year at the University of Georgia, he embarked on a successful modeling career which took him all over Europe and North America. Holloway's pursuit of acting brought him to Los Angeles, where he soon landed a role in the comedy Doctor Benny. He followed that up with lead roles in the independent films Mi Amigo, Moving August and Cold Heart. He then gained considerable notice for his lead role in the Sci-Fi channel's Sabretooth. Most recently he guest starred on CSI and Navy NCIS. Holloway's hobbies include boating, sailing, snowboarding, martial arts, motor cross and playing guitar. He currently resides in Los Angeles.

Sayid. A soldier of the Iraqi Republican Guard. The fact that he was an Iraqi soldier who fought in the Gulf War on the other side sparked suspicion in the beginning of the season--especially in Sawyer. However, his intelligence, resourcefulness, and tech savvy turned people over onto his side. He is the only one who, to this point, has encountered Danielle, who is one of the "others" on the island. While he was held capture in Danielle's "home", we learned about his former love for a woman named Nadia, who he was ordered to torture for some information regarding a bombing. He helped her to escape from the prison when he was ordered to shoot her after several months of failed interrogation. Sayid has been holding onto her pictures and his thoughts of her though he has not seen her since then. His episode is titled "Solitary" and is the 9th of Lost's first season.

London-born Naveen Andrews auditioned for drama school and was accepted at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His studies paid off when he won a role in Hanif Kureshi's film, London Kills Me. In 1993 Andrews was nominated by the Evening Standard Drama Awards as Most Promising Newcomer for his part in Wild West. His big break occurred when he was cast in the Oscar-winning film The English Patient. He then went on to appear in such films as Kama Sutra, Mighty Joe Young, True Love and Chaos, Rollerball and Drowning on Dry Land. He will also be seen in the upcoming Bride and Prejudice, directed by Gurinder Chadha for Miramax Pictures. On television his starring performance in Chippendale Murders was highly acclaimed, as was his work in the BBC's The Buddha of Suburbia, for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the San Remo Film Festival. He also starred in the BBC's Peacock Spring, Double Vision, The Frontier and Mira Nair's My Own Country. Andrerws enjoys playing the guitar, composing and reading. He resides in Los Angeles with his partner, Barbara Hershey. He has one son, Jaisal.

Shannon Rutherford. Boone's bratty, whiny, spoiled, younger sister. We definitely did NOT get a good first impression of Shannon when she stood around screaming and whining and pretty much being "useless" during Lost's Pilot. Things didn't get much better after that though, either. She continued to be snotty and conceited and though we might have felt a bit of pity for her when we saw her struggle through problems with her asthma in Confidence Man, this pretty much disappeared when we watched, in her flashbacks, as she lied to Boone about being abused so that he would pay her boyfriends to leave her alone. However, she is, like other Lostaways, going through some changes. She's starting to help out by translating French, and is even beginning to fall in love with Sayid. Locke told her that the island is giving her a chance to start over. Hopefully, she'll be taking that chance.

Having only started acting professionally two years ago, Maggie Grace already has an enviable list of credits. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Grace made her television debut two years ago as Martha Moxley in the telefilm Murder in Greenwich. She also starred in the telefilm 12 Mile Road. In addition to a recurring role on Oliver Beene, she guest-starred on Law & Order: SVU, Cold Case, Lyon's Den and CSI: Miami. Grace currently resides in Los Angeles.

Sun. The wife of the Korean couple, who SEEMS to be submissive at first. However, as her time on the island has grown, she has grown more defiant and unwilling to do everything that Jin (her husband) tells her to do. She loves her husband but is beginning to feel that he has changed from the wonderful man that she married. She is afraid of him hurting other people. This feeling of distrust that she feels regarding her husband is a result of the lack of communication that came between Sun and Jin when Jin began to work for her father. Her episode is titled "House of the Rising Sun" and is the 6th of Lost's first season.

An accomplished actress who has already made a name for herself in Korea — and all over Asia with the film Shiri — Yunjin Kim is making her mark on American television with Lost. Kim was bashful as a kid, so she decided to get over her shyness by taking drama classes in the seventh grade. She was immediately cast in a musical and fell in love with the theatre. Her Korean feature film credits include starring roles in Ardor, Yesterday, Iron Palm, Ginko Bed 2 and the Japanese film, Rush, as well as roles in the television weekend dramas With Love and Wedding Dress, and the miniseries Hunch and Beautiful Vacation. Kim was the Goodwill Ambassador for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea, representing Korea. While born in Seoul, Korea, she grew up in Staten Island, New York. She attended the prestigious High School of Performing Arts in New York and received her BFA in acting from Boston University. Kim resides in South Korea with the love of her life — her 14-year-old dog, Tobi.

Walter "Walt" Lloyd. The island's very own Harry Potter. Yep, this kid has magical powers. According to his stepfather (who seemed afraid to keep him), "weird things happen when he's around." This aspect of his life is creepy, but otherwise, he is pretty much your average 10 year-old-boy. He's playful, energetic, talkative, inquisitive, curious, and has that sense of innocence that only a child can possess. His mother passed away a few weeks before the plane crash. As Locke has said, Walt's "having a bad month." It should be interesting to see both Walt's powers and his relationship with his father evolve throughout the show.

The entertainment industry isn't new to young Malcolm David Kelley — he has been working in show business since the age of five. His motion picture credits include roles in Antwone Fisher and You Got Served. On television he guest starred in the series Judging Amy, Malcolm in the Middle, For Your Love, Girlfriends and Eve. He was also featured in numerous commercials, including Cap'n Crunch, Kool Aid, Disney and Kohl's department store. Recently he was seen in a Snoop Dog video and completed a voice over for the Nickelodeon cartoon Fatherhood. Malcolm spent the first 11 months of his life in foster care before being adopted by the Kelleys. His sister, Sydney, was adopted by the family two months later. He enjoys playing soccer and basketball, despite his small stature. He keeps up with his favorite basketball team — the Lakers — and politics, even getting involved as class Treasurer at his middle school. His leadership earned him the role of Student Ambassador with People to People Student Ambassadors, with whom he traveled to the United Kingdom last July to represent the United States.
