The band played "Neared my god to thee"
Some say so while other say they just played ragtime. More likely is that they heard the popular song "Songe d’Autumn". A trained observer, the ships lookout Harold Bride, claims that they played it as the boat went down.

Captain Smith was drunk and asleep at the time of the collision
No, he ate dinner with Mr and Mrs Thayer and they say he did not drink any alcohol. At the time of the collision he was in his cabin but arrived on the bridge only minutes after the collision But it shall be noted that Captain Smith did not slow down his ship even if he got numerous warnings of ice.

Captain Smith saved a child!
The myth say that he swam to a lifeboat with a child in his arms. When the child was safe, he pulled of his lifebelt and sank into the ocean. Probably made up by a sailor with great fantasy.

John Jacob Astor did not make an attempt to save himself
Wrong. The newspapers told that he gently had stepped aside when he placed his wife in a boat and said "No man until the women and children are into the boats". Astor did try to get into his wifes boat but was denied by Lightoller. Lightoller feared that Astor would complaint to the White Star Line about his behaviour.

The third class passangers were murdered
Another common myth or is it? There were gates to separate the classes, some gates were opened and some dont when Titanic sank. Some gates were guarded. But there was no general enforcement to make third class passangers stay, but no one helped them either. No one showed them the way up to the boatdeck. Titanic was a web of corridores, and if you did not know english the situation was even worse. Others were infact lost inside the ship since they did not know the way. No one to ask, no where to go, no one to help. Alot of third class passangers became apathic and lost their will to live. Many were gathered in the common room, not sure what was going on.

Officer Lowe shot people
It is true that officer Lowe had to use his gun a few times, but he shot in the air to stop people from climbing into a lifeboat. No one was killed by that gunfire.

The curse of Titanic
Some say there was a mumy aboard that sank the ship. The mumy was saved, after taking it into a lifeboat, and turned up on another ship, that sank 1914. Well... eeehh... If a mumy was taken aboard one of the lifeboats, I guess more people would have talked about it. There are also other curses. Jewels beloning to Marie Antoinette ... All hillarious made up by the press.

Molly Brown
No one ever called Margaret Brown for Molly, it came after her death.
