Miss Violet Jessop
Violet was born 1887 in Argentine. Her parents were Irish immigrants. After her fathers death in 1903 the family moved to England.
At 21 she became a stewardess at the Royal Mail Line. The first years at sea was spent in West India. Though in 1910 Violet begun her new career on The White Star Line. She had heard nothing but good about this company, even though she was worried about the stormy north atlantic sea. Her first ship was Majestic where she served as a stewardess in second class. But she soon worked herself up to first class. In 1911 Violet was handpicked to work on Olympic´s maiden voyage. She was also onboard Olympic during the Hawke incident in 1911. In may 1912 she was once again hand picked to serve on Titanic´s maiden voyage. According to Violet, Titanic´s maiden voyage went more smoothly than Olympic´s.
Violet had just gone to bed when Titanic hit the iceberg. She heard the crash and later she was called out of bed to assist her passangers getting dressed. Violet tried to calm passangers while she was putting them into their lifebelts. When she was done, she went down to her cabin again and begun to tidy up. A friend cougth sigth of her and told her to stop, the ship was about to sink! She got dressed and begun her way up to the boatdeck. It is unknown in wich lifeboat Violet was saved in.
During the world war one, she became a nurse and did her service on the hospital ship Britannic. When Britannic was struck by either an torpedo or a mine, Violet once more survived. Though she was injured during sinking she decided to return to the sea to finish out her career.
Violet remeined at sea until the late 1950's. She died in 1971.
