Up to date up to end of Season 4. Currently in possession of Season 5 DVDs, so update 'til end of that coming very soon.
Luke Danes; master of the diner business, grumpy yet lovable loner, and a history unknown as long as his... Well, you can imagine. (Sorry, a little lame, R-rated humour there. *sigh*)
I'm not exactly sure how old Luke is, though he seems to be a little bit older than Lorelai, and is, apparently, five weeks younger than Bootsy (episode 2.08.) He has never (and if he has, tell me now) celebrated his birthday with any of the townies, and therefore we can not be sure of when he was born, and/or what age he is currently.
As a boy, he skateboarded all the time ("I could hold my own.") and for a year wore a Star Trek shirt his aunt may or may not have bought him. In high school - which he hated - he was the State High Hurdles Champion of 1985 and everyone called him "Butch" Danes.
Luke's father died on November 30th, and every year, on that day, he seems to go into hiding, (has a 'dark day') because he gets in a terrible mood. There is boat that his father started making a long time ago, but never finished, and it was left in Mrs. Thompson's garage until she went to a nursing home. It is currently held in Lorelai's garage.
As Luke had been paying for the boat to me held in Mrs. Thompson's garage for fifteen years, and his father paying for twenty years before that, it can be said that Luke's father died about fifteen years ago. It is said that his father 'got sick,' but nothing more than that. His father was a strong believer in tradition, always participating in festivals and plays and the likes. This may be connected to why Luke hates these things.
Luke has an ongoing rivalry with Taylor. Taylor believes in all traditions, and wants all of the town to participate. Luke, however, believes all traditions are stupid, and doesn't want anything to do with them. Taylor is constantly trying to get Luke to participate; putting up turkey posters on Thanksgiving, or helping to make props for town festivals. Although Luke sometimes gives in and participates, it is never without a fight and a frown.
I have never actually heard anything about Luke's mother, though most seem to think that she died some time before his father, and that is why he is so grumpy and surly.
