The air felt so hot and thick around them. Jack could hardly breathe but it really didn’t matter at that moment. Kate felt even softer than she did in his dreams. She was smooth and soft; she was so warm. It had been a long time since he had done this so his memories were probably more distant than he realized, but it seemed that this was better than anything he’d ever felt before.

She was writhing beneath him, letting out moans that were becoming increasingly loud every time he thrust into her. He planted kisses on her neck and along her jaw line. She was groaning in his ear.

This was heaven.

Before he knew it, he heard an odd sound coming out of her. Then he felt her shake in his arms. He looked at her face. She was crying. He immediately stopped moving.

“Kate, am I hurting you?”

She shook her head but didn’t say anything. He slipped out of her, confused. What had happened? He felt like he had missed something.

“Kate?” he tried again.

She didn’t answer. Instead, she sat up and buried her face in her hands. He watched her, bewildered. He couldn’t understand what was going through her mind. He placed a hand on her shoulder as an attempt to comfort her but she vehemently shrugged it off. She looked up at him; her eyes were wet, but she was no longer crying. She didn’t look very long at him; after a couple of seconds, she started gathering her clothes and got dressed. Jack watched her silently, still naked, not knowing what to make of her behavior.

When she was finished getting dressed, she turned to Jack but didn’t look directly at him; her eyes were on the ground. She mumbled something and if Jack hadn’t paid close attention he would have missed it. She left him without saying another word.

I can’t do this.

She never looked back. It was over.
