He is a doctor, specifically a spinal surgeon and therefore is incredibly beneficial to everyone's survival on the island. He is smart, careful, and caring, though his exterior seems a bit tough at first. Jack has trouble with trusting those around him; specifically, those who lie to him, i.e. Kate. Jack's source of discomfort lies in his relationship with his deceased father, who was an alcoholic. Jack was forced to give up his father in a medical case when he believed his father's habit was affecting his ability to practice medicine. Jack had a brief marriage to a young woman named Sarah, though he did not really love her - she believed he saved her life when she was in an auto accident, and Jack, stickler for committment that he is, couldn't leave Sarah and married her regardless of his feelings. Jack's selflessness and concern for others is evident in his dealings on island; he would often go for days without sleep simply to watch over the castaways, making sure he was always ready in case someone needed him. He is looked to as the leader of the island, and carries the weight of being so solidly.
